Week Seven Videos - Race and Identity
After watching the This Is Who You Are video, I was moved to tears. This video truly summed up who we are as individuals. I believe that we all are energy, we all have families, and we all have lived with so many moving parts to them. I feel really passionate about a topic like this because I believe that we are all special. I never understood how someone could look at another's skin and say that they are a bad person. I understand with context clues, i.e. weapons, odd features, or energy.
I believe that we judge someone's appearance out of safety for ourselves, but I believe that we are more than our instincts. I think that we have instincts, that is just in our nature, but I know that we all are more than savage beast that has evolved into having opposable thumbs in a species that happened to create technology and energy. But, we are all the same as well. We are all people who want to have more for our lives, and all eat, and all shit. Why do we treat each other so poorly only based on our skin?
After watching the second video, I simply thought of how applying for colleges went. I remember putting my race and wondering if because I was Asian I would or wouldn't be accepted into a school. I remember my mother telling me that I shouldn't apply to universities with a high Asian population because I wouldn't be as smart as them, so I wouldn't get in. I have a very confusing identity when it comes to Identity. I am Cambodian, Black, and White. I feel like I fit into every space and also none of them. I often think that I am my own race because I don't quite fit into any of the ethnic groups I am a part of.
